While solid wood flooring  can last for decades, it will look a little tired and worn after several years of heavy use and a few accidents along the way. At Total Wood Flooring, we offer three flooring restoration services to provide fixes, restoration, and care for your wooden floor: 

• Full “sand and seal”
  Our most popular service, the process involves carefully sanding the floor back to “bare wood” and then preparing the floor to be coated with your chosen finish of lacquer or oil, depending on your desired finishing effect.
• Sand only
  Like with the full “sand and seal” service, we sand the floor back to “bare wood”, but with this service we do not apply any floor finishing. This service leaves a very smooth, matt-finish to the wood. For long term protection, we’d recommend applying a layer of finishing.
• Maintenance sand with finishing
  If you simply want a good clean and a light sanding of your solid wooden floor with a buffer machine, this service is for you. We apply a fresh coat of lacquer or oil finishing after the clean.

The difference between solid wood flooring and engineered wood flooring is that solid wood floors are made from planks that come from a single piece of timber, whereas engineered wood is made up of several layers of different wood types, with the layer you see and walk on being the “top layer”. 

Should I choose solid wood or engineered wood flooring?

The main benefit to solid wood flooring is that future repairs are relatively easy and cheap, especially as the material can be sanded, resurfaced, oiled and refinished many times. With engineered wood, repairs and maintenance can be more difficult and expensive, depending on the thickness of the top layer.

However, engineered wood flooring can look just as good as solid wood flooring but is often less prone to changes in moisture and heat, and is therefore suitable on top of underfloor heating systems (whereas solid wood isn’t).

Engineered wood is still created from real wood, except it’s made of several layers, with the top layer being the one that you are really paying for, which means it can be less expensive than solid wood.

• Oak is a very popular choice and available in a large range of colours. It is distinctive for its straight and swirling graining patterns, and gives a traditional look.
  
• Walnut gives the floor a luxurious dark timber look, which many homeowners now prefer.
  
• Ash flooring is a light, creamy wood colour, often with darker and distinctive knots and patterns. The wood is both flexible and very strong, and often an ideal choice for floors that need to withstand heavy foot traffic.
  
• Beech flooring is pale with a slight hint of pink, to give the room a warm feeling. Beech is great at resisting dents, and has a straight, regular grain.  
  
• Maple is generally light and pale in colour, with darker graining to give the room a clean and airy feel. Maple is one of the hardest woods available for flooring, and is very durable to dents and knocks.

The difference between new and reclaimed parquet flooring is whether the wood is from new trees or has been used for another purpose already. 

Reclaimed wood is generally a more eco-friendly way of obtaining wood, and is often harder than new woods and feature a more weathered look, which some people desire. 

Laminate flooring is very durable and easy to clean, making it an ideal choice for a busy kitchen, hallway or living room. And because it’s made from a synthetic material, laminate flooring can be chosen from a range of realistic wood, stone, and slate-looking finishes.

Should I choose laminate flooring or solid wood?

Homeowners and builders often choose laminate flooring over solid wood floors for a number of reasons. Firstly, laminate is harder to scratch than hardwood surfaces.

Secondly, it can often come down to preference of style. Many homeowners are now favouring a stone and slate-inspired look to their rooms, and laminate gives them this option. Also, laminate flooring is very low maintenance, fairly inexpensive, it lasts a long time and is ideal for many commercial uses.
